The word steak originates from the 15th-century Scandinavian word steik or, in the Middle English dialect, from the word stickna. The first reference in the Oxford English Dictionary is "a thick slice of meat cut for roasting, grilling, or roasting, sometimes used to make a pie or pudding; especially a cut from the hindquarters of an animal."
