The sweet smell of oregano was once so famous that Aphrodite considered it a symbol of happiness. The Greeks especially appreciated its scent after bathing, when they used it as an aromatic oil to massage the forehead and head. Before the Greeks, the plant was also known and loved by the ancient Egyptians. In the Middle Ages, ladies used it for flower arrangements, sweet-smelling sachets and aromatic bath water. The leaves were rubbed on heavy oak furniture and floors to coat them with a fragrant varnish.
