Do you know, that…

Cinnamon is partially linked to the Christmas season, fragrant Christmas cookies and the intimate, family atmosphere. However, before it became an indispensable element of Christmas and the most popular spice in the world, its fate was extremely turbulent.

The struggle for the monopoly of this once valuable spice went on for centuries. The Venetians, the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the English… all wanted to control the cultivation of cinnamon. It was only in the 17th century that it began to be grown and sold on an industrial scale. Today, in addition to Sri Lanka, cinnamon is grown in India, Brazil and Indonesia, among others. Interestingly, cinnamon is the only spice in the world that is obtained from the bark of a plant that is dried after pretreatment and sold either as a powder or in pieces in the form of cinnamon sticks. Thanks to its intense, yet pleasant aroma, cinnamon is also used to make perfumes and other scent mixtures.

How to use

In Hungary, ground cinnamon is used for autumn-winter and Christmas cakes and gingerbread. It is also popular for seasoning mulled wine and beer, as well as fruit preserves. It harmonizes perfectly with apple pie and other desserts and is also excellent with pears and plums. You can also highlight the flavour of the roasted goose stuffed with fruit. This spice is also used in oriental cuisine for curries, desserts and warm drinks.
